Silverton

Silverton, few outback places are as iconic and visitors come from far and wide to this little town on the edge of the real outback. Visitors come to experience what was once a thriving mining town, which later become a ghost town, only to be currently re-inventing itself as lively destination of museums, art galleries and unique cafe's and gift shops. Add to that a VERY iconic pub adorned with images of films made in the area, include Mad Max with Mel Gibson.

To the west of town is Mundi Mundi plains, a perfect place to watch the sunset over the remote outback, and sitting at the lookout, it is easy to see why its location and proximity to all the creature comforts of Broken Hill have ensured that it is popular with any film crew needing to shoot some desert and outback scenes.

In fact, the Silverton Hotel at the Burke St corner has been used in films as diverse as 'Wake in Fright', 'Mad Max 2', 'A Town Like Alice', 'Hostage', 'Razorback' , 'Journey into Darkness' and 'Golden Soak'. When you visit make sure you have a drink in the historic pub, visit the Silverton Pioneer Museum, stop off at the Gaol and Court House and inspect some of the local galleries.

Silverton is located a short drive from Broken Hill and as such relatively close to Menindee where the traveller can link up with the Darling River Run and explore the upstream section to Wilcannia and continue downstream to Pooncarie. Anyone planning to visit Broken Hill while on the Darling River Run should not miss the opportunity to also visit Silverton.
