Driving from Sydney to Darling River is easily done with several options to experience great NSW attractions along the way. Driving to Outback NSW and doing the Darling River Run can be done via the upstream sections of Bourke, Brewarrina and Walgett, the central darling sections around Wilcannia and Broken Hill, or the lower reaches where the river meets the Mighty Murray River at Wentworth.
Driving to the Darling River from Sydney
So what are the options for driving from Sydney to the Darling River?
OPtions include, the high country around Mt Kosciusko, along the mighty Murray River, or a more northern route to outback icons of Bourke and Lightning Ridge via the Hunter Valley and the New England region.
Whatever experiences you seek on your route to the Darling River Run, you are only limited by your imagination and your spirit of adventure.
Sydney to Wentworth
The Hume Highway & Sturt Highway: (Distance = 1,040km approx)
Taking the Hume Highway south from Sydney through the Southern Highlands, Goulburn, and Gundagai then heading west to Wagga Wagga along the Sturt Highway. The wonderful drive through the NSW Riverina passes through Narrandera, Hay Balranald and Mildura and then continues on the Silver City Highway to Wentworth.
Sydney to Wilcannia
The Great Western Highway > Mitchell Highway > Barrier Highway: (Distance = 970km approx)
The drive from Sydney to Wilcannia can include a stopover at the Blue Mountains before continuing west through Bathurst, Orange, Dubbo, and Nyngan via the Mitchell Highway.
From Nyngan, the Barrier Highway heads west thought NSW Outback via Cobar and onto the Darling River town of Wilcannia. Once at the Darling River, the upstream section of the Darling River Run will take you to Tilpa, Louth and onto Bourke, while Menindee (Lakes) and Wentworth are reached via the downstream sections.
At Wilcannia, the outback capital of Broken Hill is only 196kms futher on along the Barrier highway.
Sydney to Bourke
The Great Western Highway >Mitchell Highway > Castlereagh Highway: (Distance = 690km approx)
The drive from Sydney to Bourke allows the traveller to also visit the Blue Mountains before continuing west through Bathurst, Orange and Dubbo before joining the Newell highway as far as Gilgandra, then the Castlereagh Highway continues the journey to Walgett via Coonamble.
